How to Photograph a Lunar Eclipse… By Fred Espenak…

Annular Solar Eclipse May 20 2012

By Fred Espenak

A lunar eclipse occurs whenever the moon passes through the Earth’s dark shadow, which can only happen during a full moon. There are two or more lunar eclipses a year.

Types of Lunar Eclipses

Penumbral Lunar Eclipse. This occurs when the moon passes through the Earth’s penumbral shadow. These eclipses are subtle and hard to observe.

Partial Lunar Eclipse. This occurs when a portion of the moon passes through the Earth’s umbral shadow. These eclipses are easy to see with the unaided eye.

Total Lunar Eclipse. This occurs when the entire moon passes through the Earth’s umbral shadow. During the total phase (totality), the moon turns a vibrant red color. These are easy to see as well, with the unaided eye.

A lunar eclipse begins as a small notch slowly appears along one edge of the moon. During the next hour, the moon gradually dips deeper into Earth’s dark umbral shadow. If the eclipse is a total one, the last remaining minutes of the partial phases can be quite dramatic. The crescent of the moon grows thinner as darkness propagates through a night sky now deprived of moonlight. If you’re away from city lights, the Milky Way becomes bright and beautiful as the total phase begins.

No matter what kind of camera you own, there are a variety of techniques that you can use to photograph a lunar eclipse: wide-angle, telephoto, multiple exposure and star trail. While you can also use film cameras to photograph eclipses, this article specifically discusses digital camera use…

Martinique is truly “a little bit of France in the Caribbean Islands.” Martinique exudes a distinctly French feeling in the excellence of its Caribbean cuisine, the beauty of its language, the grace of its streets and gardens. Yet Martinique has a cachet all its own, an endearing West Indian warmth in its personality, a special spice in its Caribbean music and dance, its local dishes, and its way of life. Martinique is an island with style.

The Caribbean island with French flair, The Isle of Flowers, The Rum Capital of the World, The Isle of the Famed Poet (Aimé Césaire). By any one of its many names Martinique remains one of the most alluring and enchanting destinations in the world.

Named “Best Gourmet Island of the Year” in 2008 and 2009 by Caribbean World Magazine, Martinique is an overseas region of France that stirs the passions with distinctive culinary delights, awe-inspiring natural beauty, a rich cultural history, warm smiles and so much more.

Napoleon’s bride, Empress Josephine, was born and raised here. Majestic Mt. Pelée and The Pompeii of the Caribbean, Saint-Pierre, is found here. The finest French products, from Chanel fashions to Limoges porcelain, are readily available here. La Route des Rhums, a tour of the world’s finest rum distilleries based on France’s famed Route des Vins, is offered here. A special place, to be sure, with so much to offer…

TOWNS & VILLAGES

Nestled between the sea and sun, Martinique is a treasure-trove that is unique among the Caribbean islands: an exceptional natural setting with running water, mountains, gardens and forests. Thanks to the island’s surface area of only 425 square miles, everything is easily accessible. Discover the diversity of Martinique’s landscapes, its cultural heritage, its French touch, and the quality of its modern infrastructure. It is a very safe island, where ethical tourism is the norm. Martinique is a genuine Caribbean jewel, come and discover everything it has to offer…

Saint-Joseph

Saint-JosephThis small village is situated inland. The soil is fertile and the climate favorable for farming. You can go stroll through the forest on trails and bridges especially prepared for visitors.

Gros Morne

Gros MorneThis is essentially an agricultural town that dominates the region and offers a view onto the pineapple fields, which seem to stretch down all the way to the sea.

Fort De France

Fort De France

This is the business center and administrative capital of the island with many tourist attractions. Most of these attractions are grouped together around the city’s haven of greenery named La Savane (Savanna).

Le Lamentin

Le Lamentin

The airport, hippodrome horse racing course and industrial zones based in this town are three of the regional Department’s main centers of activity. The fields of sugar cane stretch out across the Lamentin plain all the way to the horizon.

Rivière-Salée

Rivière-SaléeThe Rivière-Salée is a large plain that has been given over to growing sugar cane, although there is no rum distillery within the territory belonging to this district. On some houses, you can still see structures that date to the 19th century.

Les Trois-Ilets

Les Trois-IletsYou can get here by car of course, but also on a ferry from Fort-de-France. The Pagerie Museum is in this town, set up on the spot where Empress Josephine was born. A number of musical and cultural events are organized in the Park of the Trois-Ilets close to the island’s magnificent golf club. You must not miss the Market or the Sugar Cane Museum. The pottery center, where the objects are handmade by local craft artists, is also worth a visit.

Supermoon – Biggest Full Moon of 2012 Occurs This Weekend…

Supermoon 2012; The Biggest, Brightest Moon of 2012 on May 5th

Published on May 3, 2012 by

The biggest full moon of the year, a so-called “supermoon,” will take center stage when it rises this weekend, and may interfere with the peak of an annual meteor shower created by the leftovers from Halley’s comet.

The supermoon of 2012 is the biggest full moon of the yearand will occur on Saturday (May 5) at 11:35 p.m. EDT (0335 May 6), though the moon may still appear full to skywatchers on the day before and after the actual event. At the same time, the annual Eta Aquarid meteor shower will be hitting its peak, NASA scientists say.

“Its light will wash out the fainter Eta Aquarid meteors,” NASA meteor expert Bill Cooke of the Marshall Space Flight Center told SPACE.com in an email. Still, Cooke said there’s a chance that the brightest fireballs from the meteor display may still be visible.
