By Rachel Leonard

It’s almost time for the free summer concert series at Fort Hunt Park! Bring a blanket, a picnic basket and the family dog as concerts begin in June at the “A Pavilion,” at the south end of Fort Hunt Road.

The concerts are courtesy of the National Park Service and will be held Sundays at 7 p.m., weather permitting.

Owen Hammett, a volunteer for NPS who took the lead in this summer series, called the concerts acts of public service.

“They started nearly 30 years ago, having consecutive Sunday evenings,” Hammett said. They’re from 7 to 8, and they had done this just for a long time. It’s been a tradition for a lot of families in Fort Hunt to do that on a summer evening.”

June:

10: Shenandoah Sound (Drum and bugle choir)
17: Emy Tseng (Jazz and Brazilian vocals)

The Filipino Cultural Association at University of Maryland is proud to present Philippine Culture Night 2012: “Bitaw: Letting Go” on Saturday April 14, 7PM at the Grand Ballroom. The night will be complete with a play, music, dance performances, and food!
This gripping production about sacrifice…, faith, loyalty, ambition, and success tells two stories: one of a young man struggling with his parent’s expectations; the other of two brothers, caught in a love triangle.
PCN is an unique art form specific to Filipino-American student organizations that began in the colleges and universities of California. This year will be the 30th PCN showcase that FCA-UMCP has produced. Every Spring, PCN is the culminating event that brings together the FCA family and community in order to celebrate all of our achievements, growth, and pride in the Filipino American culture.
We can’t wait to see you there!
Peace, Love, and FCA.

Joe NamI won’t actually be attending this because I will be hosting my Viet Meetup at Vietnamese Student Associationnight at George Mason- same date and time.I created and organize Towson UniversityVSA and can say that college kids really appreciate the community’s support and love. As this is the Filipino Meetup group, the group should support Pinoy and Pinay students. Makes sense? :-) Food will be included in the ticket price. Show some love and represent, alright?

Hamilton Park – Computer Love [Official Video]

Hamilton Park is a newly signed R&B group on Andre Harrell’s new label at Atlantic Records. HP is from the peach state that honed their harmonizing skills and developed chemistry by singing in church, on Marta trains and buses around the City of Atlanta looking to be discovered. Drawing comparisons from such legendary groups like, Jodeci, Guy and Jagged Edge.

The group’s vocal texture and ability is reminiscent of a period in music when the artist had to have showmanship, talent, and real Vocals. Their songs are infectious expressions of youth that you can feel that’s often abandoned in today’s disposable pop environment.

Fil-Am Friendship Day Festival VA BEACH – Saturday, June 30, 2012

FIL-AM FRIENDSHIP DAY
Please join us on Saturday June 30th at 9:00 AM For Fil-Am Friendship Day 2012 at Redwing Park, Virginia Beach
Mission
-Philippine Independence Day History-

On the Fourth of July, we celebrate American Independence. July 4th is, however, also a day to celebrate the beginning of the modern Philippines. July 4th has become known as “Filipino American Friendship Day”, the day the Philippines celebrate independence from Japanese occupation and American colonization. Since the Philippine Islands are also one of the partners in the effort to bring terrorists to justice, it is even more important this year to remember our friendship and alliance with the people of the Philippines.

Ferdinand Magellan landed on an island called Homonhon in 1521 and found a land filled with white beaches, unexplored isles, untouched forests, rich lands, and a spectacular climate. Magellan claimed it and named it “Felipinas”, after the King Philip of Spain.

When the Spanish conquistadors arrived, they began converting and colonizing the people of the islands. They found the islands were a cultural melting pot, with well-developed business settlements with Chinese, Arabs, Japanese, and other Islamic seafaring merchants. In 1571, the Spaniards established a colonial government in Manila and ruled the country for over 300 years.

In 1896, Filipinos rose up in rebellion and successfully led Asia’s first nationalistic revolution. After several attempts, they freed themselves from the yoke of the Spanish rule. On June 12, 1896, the people of the Philippines enjoyed their first Independence Day. For many, that date remains the actual Independence Day for the Philippines.

While they were freed from Spanish rule, after the Spanish-American War, the Philippines fell under the colonial rule of the United States. The Americans did, however, introduce democratic processes and public education, and they developed infrastructure throughout the islands as well.

Japanese rule until 1945, when American and Filipino-American forces liberated them. Only July 4, 1946, they were declared an independent nation for the first time since 1571.

Reformist President, Diosdado Macapagal, returned Philippine Freedom Day to the June 12th date. He felt that the Fourth of July activities in the United States overshadowed the Philippine independence celebration, so he declared July 4th Filipino American Friendship Day” in the islands.
