Scooby-Doo, Cesar Millan and friends are headed to the National Mall in Washington, DC on September 29th, 2012 for the 2nd Annual National Family Pack Walk event. This is not your average walk in the park; they will be walking to save the lives of dogs at this year’s event.
Cesar Millan will kick-off the event with a one mile Pack Walk. Upon completion of the walk, attendees will return to the event area for an afternoon filled with fun, mystery, education and much more presented by Scooby-Doo, Mutt-i-grees®, North Shore Animal League America and other partners.

Trying to explain what Burning Man is to someone who has never been to the event is a bit like trying to explain what a particular color looks like to someone who is blind. In this section you will find the peripheral definitions of what the event is as a whole, but to truly understand this event, one must participate. This site serves to try to paint a picture of the Burning Man experience to those who are new to the project, as well as to give those participants looking to keep the fire burning in their daily lives an environment in which to connect to their fellow community members. Here you will find links that will take you on a trip through the past – through the history of Burning Man – from its early days on a small beach in San Francisco through its evolution into the bustling city of some 48,000+ people that the Burning Man event has become today. These people make the journey to the Black Rock Desert for one week out of the year to be part of an experimental community, which challenges its members to express themselves and rely on themselves to a degree that is not normally encountered in one’s day-to-day life. The result of this experiment is Black Rock City, home to the Burning Man event.
There are no rules about how one must behave or express oneself at this event (save the rules that serve to protect the health, safety, and experience of the community at large); rather, it is up to each participant to decide how they will contribute and what they will give to this community. The event takes place on an ancient lakebed, known as the playa. By the time the event is completed and the volunteers leave, sometimes nearly a month after the event has ended, there will be no trace of the city that was, for a short time, the most populous town in the entire county. Art is an unavoidable part of this experience, and in fact, is such a part of the experience that Larry Harvey, founder of the Burning Man project, gives a theme to each year, to encourage a common bond to help tie each individual’s contribution together in a meaningful way. Participants are encouraged to find a way to help make the theme come alive, whether it is through a large-scale art installation, a theme camp, gifts brought to be given to other individuals, costumes, or any other medium that one comes up with.
The Burning Man project has grown from a small group of people gathering spontaneously to a community of over 48,000 people. It is impossible to truly understand the event as it is now without understanding how it has evolved. See the first years page and Burning Man 1986 – 1996 for the legendary story of Burning Man’s beginnings and to understand how the event has come to become what it is today. The timeline gives a short overview of what each year looked like. Please also check out the detailed archives for years 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010. Within each of these years are descriptions each year’s art theme, theme camps, large art installations, as well as maps, journals of our city being built, the newsletters to the community for each year, issues of the Black Rock Gazette (a daily news publication produced and printed on the playa), and clean up reports for each year, including a list of those sites that failed to “leave no trace”. These pages help understand the larger scope of the entire experience, from the planning that happens year-round to make each event possible, to the clean-up efforts which take place for sometimes months after the city has disappeared.
The impact of the Burning Man experience has been so profound that a culture has formed around it. This culture pushes the limits of Burning Man and has led to people banding together nation-wide, and putting on their own events, in attempt to rekindle that magic feeling that only being part of this community can provide. The Black Rock Arts Foundation promotes interactive art by supporting public art that exists outside the event, and has a special interest in supporting art at regional events. Additionally, Burning Man has over two thousand volunteers who work before, during and after the event (many who work year-round) to make the event a reality. The Inaugural National Harbor Dragon Boat Regatta will take place Aug 25 at the National Harbor. Filipino Young Professionals (FYP) of DC is entering a team for the event. Members from both Lapu Lapu and Rizal will be competing in the “Open” division.

Fairfax, Virginia–This year, the 9th Asian Food and Tennis Festival is celebrating the Year of the Dragon on July 21 to 22 in this county. To add more fun and enjoyment for families, Festival Committee official George Duangmanee has announced an extension of two additional hours on July 22, Sunday.
The Festival is a two-day, FREE admission event to promote greater understanding of the Asian countries and cultures. It takes place on July 21, Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., and on July 22, Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. It is open to the public.
The Festival will again be held at the George Mason University Main Campus here in Fairfax. “It is spacious, convenient and provides us with a larger footprint to showcasing different Asian countries at the same time,” he said. “Attendees can also park their cars in the parking lot next to the Festival site.”
This year’s theme is “The Year of the Dragon,” where spectators will discover the Dragon lord of the heavens and rain maker’s representation in their own cultural and heritage in four different showcase areas: Heritage India, It’s More Fun In Philippines, Image Of China, And Amazing Thailand.
The Festival will showcase all-day prized money tennis tournament, stage performances, contests, interactive demonstrations, children interactive area with carnival rides, and games–as well as “Destination Asia,” where Asian embassies and organizations exhibit their cultures, arts, and cooking demonstration.
The Festival will have over 200 multi-cultural vendors and exhibitions, featuring 35 multi-cultural food and product vendors. Among them are Chinese, Vietnamese, Indian, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Laotian and Philippine cuisine and handicrafts.
This year, the Thai Tennis Organization in America (TTOA) will again partner with Singha Beer and the United States Tennis Association Virginia to bring this exciting Festival to Asian American families and the general public. Media partners include Manila Mail and Asian Fortune.
TTOA works with several Asian American Associations to introduce Asian cultures to the local community. It also aims to promote tennis growth and encourage young people to broaden their horizons through scholarships. TTOA, a proud member of the USTA family, was the recipient of the 2004 Organization of the Year Award by USTA Mid-Atlantic section and the USTA Virginia District.

Ekoji Buddhist Temple is celebrating its 31st Obon Festival on Saturday, July 14 at 5:30 p.m. with a full-evening of activities including traditional Japanese folk dancing, a memorial candle ceremony, children’s games and a taiko performance by Nen Daiko. Obon, or Bon, is a time of remembrance for our parents, grandparents and those who have come before us; it is a time to express our gratitude for all they have done for us, and for the interconnectedness of our lives.
The first video shows a group dance. I participated last year at the one in Ekoji. Sure I looked terrible but it was a lot of fun with friends. The second video shows the taiko drum performance they do every year. The last video is just general information about Obon Festival.
Bon Odori (盆踊り), meaning simply Bon dance is a style of dancing performed during Obon. Originally a Nenbutsu folk dance to welcome the spirits of the dead, the style of celebration varies in many aspects from region to region. Each region has a local dance, as well as different music. The music can be songs specifically pertinent to the spiritual message of Obon, or local min’yo folk songs. Consequently, the Bon dance will look and sound different from region to region. Hokkaidō is known for a folk-song known as “Soran Bushi.” The song “Tokyo Ondo” takes its namesake from the capital of Japan. “Gujo Odori” in Gujō, Gifu prefecture is famous for all night dancing. “Goshu Ondo” is a folk song from Shiga prefecture. Residents of the Kansai area will recognize the famous “Kawachi ondo.” Tokushima in Shikoku is very famous for its “Awa Odori,” or “fool’s dance,” and in the far south, one can hear the “Ohara Bushi” of Kagoshima

Obon is the Japanese Festival of the Dead in which Japanese believe the souls of the departed return home for a brief while. Obon is a Buddhist tradition but in the native Shinto faith there is the Mitama Festival which is in association with Obon. Mitama means soul of a deceased person.
At Yasukuni Shrine they celebrate Mitama/Obon Festival in July. Although a place of Shintoism, Yasukuni pretty does much of what traditional Obon celebrations do particularly Bon Odori (dances) and Toro Nagashi (place paper lanterns in the water). The only difference is the Mikoshi (portable Shinto shrine) which they march up to the shrine swaying and chanting.
